Prayer Letter for Germany - July/August 2019
Dear intercessors,
The focus of the prayer letter this month is on the prayer conference that took place in Bonn at the end of May in which the central theme was to give thanks to God on the 70th anniversary of the German Basic Law, which was adopted on May 23rd, 1949, as the provisional Federal Republic of Germany Constitution. The Basic Law was valid only in West Germany until the reunification of Germany in 1990 when it became the Constitution for both former East and West Germany in the reunited land of the Federal Republic of Germany.
We were unable to attend the conference as Margaret was recovering after an operation in the hospital - from which she has now fully recovered - but we have been watching the video recordings of some of the sessions on the internet.
We feel that it is important to note here for our English-speaking intercessors from the USA, Canada, Great Britain and other allied countries in WWII, that in the session on "God’s love and grace and his remarkable work in our nation in post-war German history", (presented by Alexander Schlueter who lives in Bonn, the West German capital from 1949 until 1990), special mention was made of the contribution of the USA and Great Britain in the restoration of Germany with sincere thanks in these areas:
- Financial and material support for the rebuilding of cities and industries lying in ruins, and support to farmers to restore food supplies - especially the generosity of the USA with the Marshall Plan in 1947-48.
- The focus in 1945 on de-Nazification of Germany with the reform of political and educational systems, and the restoration of press, radio, literature distribution and cultural activities, free from Nazi ideology.
- The "Air-Bridge" to Berlin in 1948-49, when American and British planes were dropping essential food supplies to West Berliners isolated by the Soviet blockade - instead of dropping bombs as in the war years.
- The absence of an attitude of revenge after the war on the part of the allied military forces and administrations, and a determination to restore Germany.
Let us in turn give thanks to our German brothers and sisters for the acknowledgement of these contributions and pray that by God's love and grace we can continue to support each other in prayer as we all face challenging times in our countries in these days.
With many blessings for the summer months,
Your Call of the Watchmen Team - International.
